Women, beauty practises didn’t just perform an aesthetic function. Such rituals were laden with social, spiritual, and ritual significance.
1) Kiseh (کیسه حمام) & Sefidab (سفیداب)
An integral part of the Iranian bathing ritual are kiesh and sefidab. Sefidab is a white substance that has been used since antiquity. It is composed of naturally occurring minerals and animal fat. If used in conjunction with a scrubbing glove or mitt, sefidab works wonders as a body exfoliator and peel. Use a scrubbing mitt rubbed with sefidab to thoroughly scrub the body while taking a shower to get rid of dirt and dead skin. The benefits of using sefidab before washing with soap will be lessened. Beautiful, smooth skin is the end result without breaking the bank at the spa.
2) Sedr (سدر)
This traditional natural shampoo and conditioner, created from the powdered leaves of the Zizyphus lotus plant, strengthens and encourages hair growth. Sedr, which is still in use in Iran today, works wonders for damaged and dandruff-prone hair. Just whisk together 2-4 tablespoons of the powder and water to form a thick paste. Before rinsing out, massage the mixture into your scalp and hair and let it sit for at least an hour.
3) Pumice stone (سنگ پا)
Persians call this black volcanic rock sang-e pah, and they use it to polish and exfoliate their feet. To reveal soft, salon-ready feet, use this pumice stone in the shower to remove calluses and dead skin.
4) Henna (حنا)
In the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia, henna, a natural plant dye, is widely used. Iranian women adore henna for its therapeutic qualities as well as the rich red color it gives their hair. Henna works wonders as a conditioner for hair, trapping in moisture to give hair a healthier, more glossy appearance.
5) Egg yolk (زرده تخم مرغ)
Wishing for shiny, silky hair? Look no further than your kitchen pantry. This old fashioned treatment is a cheap and easy way to increase volume and make hair softer and silkier. Beat together at least 2 egg yolks with a little olive oil and apply to the hair, leaving it on for 30-45 minutes before shampooing and conditioning as usual.
